About ben
The "Artist" (chortling)
The perfect soundtrack for your getaway car, Ben's Monkey delivers sophisticated instrumental music ranging from laid-back tiki vibes to conservative face-melt. Imagine winding coastal highways, vintage hot rods, endless sunshine, and a perfectly mixed mai tai riding shotgun. Every track is built to keep the good times rolling.
Behind Ben's Monkey is guitarist, composer, producer, and recording engineer Ben Kunkel, who has been writing, recording, engineering, and producing music for... well... a long time now.
His musical journey began in 1988 when he picked up a guitar—only to throw it out a window shortly afterward. Fortunately, a second attempt in 1993 proved far more successful.
In 1994, Ben joined the Sarasota, Florida, cover band Sound & Fury, where he not only sharpened his chops but also met his future wife, drummer Sharon Kunkel. Ironically, he was eventually kicked out of the band for "hooking up with the drummer."
In 1996, Ben formed the original rock band Dragonfly Ripple, releasing four albums:
* Corduroyporpoiswhistle (1996)
* Dragonfly Ripple (2005)
* In Search of Harmelodius Rex (2006)
* You Are Here (2008–2012)
During multiple hiatuses from Dragonfly Ripple, Ben built his own recording studio and transitioned into engineering and music production. In 2002, Network Media began licensing his instrumental compositions for television, and his music has since appeared on Discovery, History, ESPN, Speed, Telemundo, Spice, and numerous other broadcast networks.
In 2008, Ben and members of Dragonfly Ripple formed Super Dogs Rock, creating inspirational rock music for children. Following the passing of Dragonfly Ripple bassist and vocalist Chris Puleo in 2013, the band came to a close.
Today, Ben continues performing throughout the Sarasota area with the classic rock cover bands Version 3.0 and Monkey Finger, while continuing to write, record, and produce original instrumental music.
Ben's Monkey represents the fun side of musical escapism. Every track is an instrumental journey. Sometimes the road is lined with roaring guitars and dive bars; other times, it's lined with tiki bars and palm trees. So roll down the windows, turn up the volume, and enjoy the ride.
